A Metadata Metaphor

Metadata is a set of data that describes and gives information about other data. That’s not an overly descriptive definition.

Let's think about it in terms of ice cream because who doesn't love ice cream?! The metadata of a tub of ice cream, for instance, contains:

  • The product name: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream
  • A description: A blurb telling me just how delicious it is and why I'm definitely going to want to buy it.
  • The ingredients: A list of everything that makes up what I'm about to dig into.
  • The brand name tells me who created this tasty treat.

All of this gives the grocer information about how to categorize the product and where to stock it. It gives the consumer information about whether or not they would be interested in buying it.

Audiobook Metadata

Similarly, the metadata for your audiobook helps our partner platforms categorize your audiobook so that potential listeners can find it. You'll need to enter the following metadata to submit your audiobook:

  • Audiobook title
  • Subtitle
  • Author
  • Narrator
  • Language
  • Genre
  • Description
  • Print owner’s name
  • Copyright information
  • MSRP - The suggested list price
  • ISBNs - We’ll happily provide you with free ISBNs for your audiobook if you don’t already have one.
  • Abridged label
  • Explicit content labels
    and more...

Formatting Your Metadata

Our partners need metadata sent to them in different formats, so you can enter your metadata once, and our team packages it up with a pretty little bow!

Avoid entering your metadata in ALL CAPS— somewhere someone started the myth that if you SCREAM your metadata, your book will sell more. Not true. Title Case or lowercase work just fine.

Creating Great Audiobook Descriptions

When it comes to creating and formatting the description for your audiobook, unfortunately, many of our partner platforms do not accept HTML. To ensure consistency across all platforms, keep your description in a simple paragraph form.

Creating book descriptions that convert to sales can prove to be challenging. Need help writing yours? We've gathered some helpful resources here.
